Hi and welcome to my blog. I really think parents need to lighten up; I mean, if parenting was meant to be a serious endeavor they'd offer classes! Oh, wait....

Identity Lost

I have three children. I have a four year old and two almost three year olds. I’ve learned a few things over the past four years. The first is that as my children get older, the feat of birthing three kids in twenty-two months gets less impressive. I mean, now when I say I have three kids under the age of four, I might get an, “Oh, really.” But back in the day, when I said I had three children under the age of two, peoples’ eyes used to really bug out! I miss the awe that feat inspired, and the sympathy. The second thing I’ve learned is that everyone figures that by now I’ve got it all together. Boy, are they mistaken!
I’m a mother, wife, maid, chef, referee, chauffeur, nurse, teacher, friend, confidante, and occasional lover. Far too occasional on that last point; it’s hard to be sexy in yoga pants. But I’m not wearing underwear. Does that count? But I digress. Anyway, first and foremost I am Mommy. I wipe faces, noses and butts. I am the keeper of the snacks and the finder of all things lost. I’m the woman my children cry for when hurt and the one they blame when dinner is late. I run the house, when it isn’t running me.
I used to be more than Mommy. I used have a job outside the home, an identity so to speak. I was in public relations. I had prestige, influence…money. But things change. Cutbacks happen. Illness happens. And so here I am. I am Mommy.

I totally know what you mean when you say you used to have an identity. I feel that way so often. I used to have things to talk about other than how many times the baby pooped today, or how naptime went. I know that someday, when they're bigger, I'll get to have interests and do adult things again, and I'll probably even miss these days. But sometimes it's hard to keep that in mind, especially if we go hang out with people that don't have kids, or only have one or two. Anyway, totally don't have anything that constructive to day, just wanted to say I know how ya feel...
